Long Run
Another great day for a long run, blue skies, cold but fresh, mist on the fields. I was only scheduled to do 5 miles but ended up doing 5.66. I’m trying to adhere to the training schedule and not over do it at the moment, so even though I felt like I could of done double that distance today I stuck to the schedule and even warmed down (or is it cooled down) at the end of the run and did 10 minutes of walking. That made my pace look a bit slower when I uploaded to the computer but hey – who’s checking?
Found some great music to listen to as well, having tried pod runner during the week I thought Afro Celts would be good for running too and I was right.

Short Run

The weather has definitely got more wintery this week. I even wore my gloves today, think I might have to get some long running trousers after all.

I did a cross training session yesterday – warmed up by running to the gym which is in another of my works buildings. Last time I was there i remember them having a rowing machine but it wasn’t there this time – there were a couple of new running machines, but i wasn’t there for running today. I ended up using a rickety old bike with these big handles that you moved at the same time whilst it blew air over you – not very hi tech but it did the job and had a good work out.

Looking forward to my 5 mile run on Sunday.

podrunner

Short Run

Nice calm day today so I thought i’d give the podrunner podcast a try. Basically it is a podcast with rave / house music played at a certain beat that is meant to make you exercise faster. I’m not the biggest fan of rave music but it has its moments and this was quite fun. There are a few different beats going on so its easy enough to time your run to a beat you feel comfortable with, my run was slightly faster but that was down to a bit more effort put in by me as well. I’ll probably just use it for the short runs and maybe on the cross training sessions as well, the first of which I have tomorrow, I’m planning to go to my works gym and use the rowing machine for 20 minutes.

Long Run

On my marathon training schedule there are a couple of short and one long run each week as well as other training sessions. Its not just about the distance but the pace as well, so tonights long run was only 4 miles – the training schedule advises taking walking breaks, but I actually find it more comfortable to keep running. I know running at different paces can build your strength but I think that as long as i’m doing that in other training sessions I can just enjoy my long runs and take them at a steady pace.

My wife was working today so I was watching the kids and didn’t get out running till 8.00pm this evening. Weather was awfull so I wore t-shirt, top, and coat. Then I was too warm, I always seem to over estimate on the layers.

I used G-Map Pedometer to work out some routes last night, and worked out a perfect loop that is near enough exactly 4 miles. Looks like my Garmin Forerunner 50 is fairly accurate as well.

I also planned a 10k route (Thats the problem with measurements – we were taught both at school, if i’m measuring something with a ruler I think in centimetres, but i generally think of longer distances in terms of miles, but then when it comes to running you think of race distances and plan accordingly)

I think half the fun of the running so far has come from tinkering with the technology.

Belfast Waterfront Hall

Short Run

Bit of a wet and windy day but i’m still feeling highly motivated at this point. As with the bike, i’m still wearing shorts despite the cold weather – for some reason my legs don’t seem to feel the cold. Maybe get some new gear at Christmas. I’ve just registered with fetcheveryone.com – seems like a good site for logging your runs and seeing how other runners at your level are doing. They also have a facility for logging your runs on google maps – so i’ll be able to test the accuracy of my Garmin Forerunner 50.

Fartlek

Did a Fartlek session today, still not really sure what this does but according to my marathon training programme I should warm up for 5 minutes then run fast for 4 minutes then jog slowly for 1 minute and repeat those last 2 stages another 3 times. There was a bit of uppy downy activity on the graph when i uploaded my running data, but i’m still not sure wether i’m pacing myself properly for these Fartlek runs.

Ran to subway at the end of the run for a vegie pattie, then ran back to work and scoffed it hungrily.

Not sure how accurately my Garmin Forerunner 50 is recording my runs – i’ll have to drive round one of my routes to test.

The fish above is on part of the riverside route I usually do when i’m running at lunch time in Belfast. I’ll write more about my routes on future posts.

Short Run

Didn’t get running at lunch time as I had a meeting at work (with a free feed – yay) so went tonight whilst O was in scouts. Nice dry night, didn’t push it too hard. Did a loop from cathedral up to Laurel Hill school and back via the omniplex.
